Is the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight still relevant? Floyd’s uncle and trainer, Jeff Mayweather, believes it is. Even more so than other big-money fights right now. ‘Money’ and ‘Pac-Man’ are set to face each other sometime this year, as announced by the Philippines resident on December 31 during the RIZIN 45 MMA event.

While there hasn’t been an official statement from Mayweather’s camp, the president of the Japanese MMA promotion confirming the same adds weight to the claim. Discussing the same, The Mayweather Channel caught up with Floyd’s uncle today, and the ‘Black Mamba’ spoke highly about the fight’s relevance. However, is it bigger than Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez or Dmitry Bivol vs. Artur Beterbiev? Here’s what Jeff had to say!

Jeff Mayweather on Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao

There have been some doubts about whether people would want to see the fight, especially since it would transpire in Japan under a Japanese promotion. So, the reporter from The Mayweather Channel asked Jeff about his thoughts. Jeff Mayweather had the answer ready to go, as he claimed it would be more relevant than any other fights that are making the headlines these days.

“Yeah! Obviously, it’s still relevant, and probably [it’s] going to be more people wanting to see that fight than the biggest fight they have here in terms of the generation of fighters that they have right now,” said Jeff Mayweather. Whether it will be relevant or not can only be proven when the numbers from the fight come to light after the fight happens. However, the numbers from the first fight may put things into perspective.

Fight of the Century: The numbers

Marketed as the ‘Fight of the Century’ or the ‘Battle for Greatness,’ the numbers from the fight broke record numbers of the time. It produced more than $600 million in revenue, which included tickets, PPV, sponsorships, merchandise, closed-circuit and international rights. However, the biggest contributor to the vast sum came from the pay-per-view sales.

According to sources, the epic clash collected 4.4 million PPV buys in the US, not counting 700 K from the UK, which translated to a whopping $430 million in revenue. What’s more, Mayweather and Pacquiao had a 60-40 deal, collecting $240 million and $125 million, respectively. It’s worth mentioning that the first fight was in 2015. While it was almost a decade from today, fans often clamor to watch Mayweather in action in his exhibition fights. So, what’s stopping them from watching the legendary fighters run it back again.

Even though it’s been eight years since their first encounter, Jeff Mayweather believes fans would want to watch the clash. What are your thoughts on the matter – would you like to see the rematch? Who do you think would win this time around?
