Jeanne Dean, a stage and screen thesp who was the original Varga model for Esquire magazine, died Aug. 20 of emphysema. She was 68.
Born in Chicago May 30, 1925, Dean was well-known as the original model for Alberto Varga, who used her exclusively from 1940-47 for many of his paintings.
She then signed with MGM, appearing in such pix as “Pirate” with Judy Garland , “Virtuous” and “The Bride Goes Wild.” Other credits include “Sundown in Santa Fe,””Texas Heaven and Brooklyn,””Angels in Disguise,””Hot Rod,””One Night Stand, “”Voodoo Tiger,””Never Wave at a WAC,””GOG,””Chicago Confidential,””Radar Patrol” and “Spy Kings.”
On TV she appeared in several episodes of Jack Webb’s “Dragnet” series and she traveled with the USO during World War II performing for U.S. troops in Europe.
An accomplished poet as well, Dean penned “Now Is Only a Heartbeat” and won the Golden Poet Award in San Francisco.
