Viola Davis, born August 11, 1965, is an American actress and producer known for “The Help,” “Fences” and the TV series “How to Get Away With Murder.” She has been awarded an Oscar, an Emmy, a Grammy and a Tony. After attending the Juilliard School, she started her career on the stage in “Everybody’s Ruby” and went on to win a Tony for the 2001 Broadway production of August Wilson’s “King Hedley II.” Her first major film role was in “Doubt,” for which she received an Oscar nomination for supporting actress. Davis gained even more attention for her role as a maid in the hit film “The Help,” and was Oscar-nominated for best actress. After her Tony-winning performance as Rose Maxson in “Fences,” she reprised the role in the 2016 film version, winning an Oscar for supporting actress. Moving into television, she played a lawyer on ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder,” and became the first Black actress to win an Emmy for lead actress in a drama. Davis then joined the DC Extended universe with a role in “Suicide Squad” and returned for “The Suicide Squad” in 2021. Her role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” garnered her a fourth Oscar nomination. Davis’ other notable roles include “Widows,” “The Woman King” and “Air,” as well as “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” Together with her husband Julius Tennon, Davis founded JuVee Productions. She completed her EGOT with a Grammy for the audiobook of her memoir “Finding Me.”
